Don’t complain about anything

So yesterday I had a patient undergoing chemotherapy for bladder cancer. She came because she was pee’ing blood (hematuria) and because she had a fever. Pretty routine patient for an ER doctor.

But most patients would freak out about this. Nope, not her. She was calm and pleasant.

I couldn’t believe it when she told me she also had had (and beat) colon cancer and ovarian cancer. On top of that, when treating her previous cancer, she developed a leg blood clot (DVT) which travelled to her lungs (pulmonary embolism) and had to be on blood thinners.

This lady reinforced my belief that we really shouldn’t complain about ANYTHING. We all have so much to be grateful for. There will always be people who have things worse than we do. Can you imagine how touch it is to battle cancer? And…THREE TIMES!

I say it all the time. Even though I’m the doctor, I often learn so much from my patients.

Be positive and be grateful. When my good friend Ashkan hears of someone complaining about a problem, he always says “First world problem, bro.”

Bottom line…DON’T COMPLAIN about anything.
